Green Roof Supplies

If you’re ready to choose a new roof system, you are probably considering many factors including cost, durability, timeline, aesthetics, and architectural style. And if you’re like a growing group of people, you are also thinking about installing an eco-friendly roof. If you are wanting to use roof materials made from recycled materials, you should look for a roofer who uses quality green roofing products like Malarkey shingles.

Said Skyline Roofing owner, Angie Nelson, “Skyline Roofing is committed to providing green roofing options for our customers, including green roofing products and solar energy solutions.”

Angie is a LEED-certified designer. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a program in the green building industry. They promote using building products that reduce the environmental impact of construction, such as Malarkey shingles. Skyline Roofing uses Malarkey shingles because they are one of the best-performing shingles on the market. They are manufactured from upcycled plastic. As one example, the granules that create the color have up to 65% greater granule adhesion than the industry standard. This is partially due to the valuable polymers extracted from plastic waste material that are used to make them.

Sustainability in the roofing industry

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the roofing industry is responsible for 40 million tons of roofing waste. That is waste being sent to landfills each year. With this in mind, some roofing product manufacturers have taken it upon themselves to produce products that reduce the environmental impact.

With a goal of reducing plastic waste, Malarkey figured out a way to extract certain plastics. Only utilize those that contain valuable polymers for roofing shingles and then upcycle them into high-performance, polymer-modified asphalt.

Upcycling alone is a powerful solution to the waste in the industry but Malarkey uses other green strategies as well. For example, at the end of their service life, asphalt roofing shingles can be ground up and repurposed into material for road paving.

Sustainable roofing products by the numbers

To cover the average-sized roof of 3,000 square feet with NEX® shingles takes 30 roofing squares. Those shingles use reclaimed material that equates to about 5.5 rubber tires and 350 plastic bags. When you multiply that reclaimed material by many houses, the positive environmental impact is substantial.

“At Skyline Roofing, in 2022 alone, we have diverted 210 rubber tires and 13,340 plastic bags from landfills because we used Malarkey roofing shingles. In addition, we have contributed the equivalent of the air filtration of 84 trees because of the Malarkey shingle’s smog reducing granules”, shared Angie.

Green Roofing Products

At Skyline Roofing, we are proud to offer green roofing products manufactured by Malarkey Roofing. Malarkey Roofing uses a cleaner shingle-making technology to make their shingles, which creates much fewer emissions than the oxidized asphalt method used to make standard shingles.  Manufacturers combine high-grade asphalt with virgin rubber polymers (SBS), as well as recycled rubber and plastic polymers to manufacture shingles, this combination of materials improves the shingles’ properties, including impact strength Their proprietary NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt technology then chemically rubberizes the asphalt core of the shingle.

Malarkey Roofing products are GreenCircle® certified for Recycled Product Content and Waste Diversion from Landfill at all its manufacturing facilities.

Benefits of Green Roofing Products

There are many benefits to using Malarkey green roofing products:

  •         Superior all-weather resilience
  •         Longer product life than standard shingles (the NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized)   Asphalt formulation enhances the shingles’ durability with up to 30% greater strength and 65%  greater granule adhesion)
  •         Reduced environmental impact over standard shingle manufacturing
  •         Upcycles both rubber and plastic to reduce waste in landfills
  •         Cleaner air (smog-reducing granules in the roofing material help clean the air of emission-based pollutants)
  •         Timeliness (product is readily available)
  •         A waterproof and weatherproof membrane beneath the roof tile that protects the structural     integrity of the roof for many years
